North Brabant
Information and Tourism
North Brabant is a haven of tranquillity, an unlikely find in an area that is surrounded by busy cities such as
Rotterdam, as well as being nearby the German region of Ruhr. Its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful cities have been a winning combination in recent years for tourists who come here in search of a little of both.
The main city of 's-Hertogenbosch, better known as Den Bosch, has some fine historic buildings and museums. If the name sounds familiar, it may be because the painter Hieronymus Bosch decided to adopt it for himself.
When it comes to old cities, Eindhoven isn't lacking. And yet, its long history is certainly not obvious at first glimpse, which means that tourists often overlook North Brabant's biggest city when it comes to sightseeing. Eindhoven is certainly the busiest and most modern of the region's cities. In particular, it is home to some of the largest Dutch companies, including the electronics giant Philips and truck makers DAF. Dig beneath the modern veneer of Eindhoven and you will be amply rewarded by views of the city's 12 national heritage sights.
Out in the countryside, North Brabant encompasses an interesting mix of landscapes, from western wetlands to eastern woods and farmers' fields. Dotted here and there are traditional Dutch windmills, just waiting to be photographed.
If the peace and quiet of North Brabant gets all too much, thrill seekers can head for the Efteling theme park in Kaatsheuvel, which is the biggest theme park in the Netherlands. A familiar part of the North Brabant landscape since the early 1950s, it has evolved in recent years to become a vast complex that is said to rival California's Disneyland.
