Birmingham Landmarks and Monuments
(Birmingham, West Midlands, England, UK)
Birmingham is certainly a city with a lengthy history and there is evidence that a settlement was present in this very spot more than 10,000 years ago, close to Curzon Street. The arrival of the Bull Ring market in the middle of the 12th century saw Birmingham grow from a village into a market town, and in 1889, it was granted the status of city by Queen Victoria.
Today, many important landmarks remain, including some traditional red-brick Victorian buildings, although the face of Birmingham changed dramatically following the bombing damage during the WWII blitz. Modern architecture and design has seen the face of the city transformed, with the arrival of spacious public plazas such as both Millennium Place and Centenary Square.
