Mauritius Hotels and Accommodation

(Mauritius, MU, Africa)

Port Louis waterfront pictureTourism is big business in Mauritius, so accommodation is plentiful, ranging from luxury hotel resorts to rented villas, guesthouses and apartments. The majority of accommodation can be found around the coast of Mauritius, close to its beaches.

Whilst there's no official rating system in Mauritius, the hotels and tour operators do provide their own lodging ratings, which may be helpful. It has to be said that the island boasts more higher rated hotels than those which can be classed as mid-range or budget accommodation. In particular, there are a number of hotels and holiday resorts that combine very comfortable rooms with spa, beach or golfing facilities.

In Mauritius, high season opens in November with the start of the summer and peaks during December. Expect prices to go up and demand for rooms to increase at this time of year. At other times, it's worth looking out for early booking deals, honeymoon discounts, or long-stay special offers.

Where to Stay

Hotel resorts in Mauritius are popular with those looking for high-end accommodation, particularly sports enthusiasts, honeymoon couples, families and those who prefer to stay on an all-inclusive basis. Examples of these include the Heritage Awali Golf and Spa Resort - located in Bel Ombre on the southern side of the island, the Legends Resort at the fishing village of Grand Gaube, and the Residence in Belle Mare, which has undeniable colonial elegance, charm and comfort, along with a 24-hour private butler service.

If staying at a large hotel resort isn't your idea of fun, a small family run hotel may be more to your liking. These tend to offer mid-range accommodation in a quieter and more relaxed environment.

The advantage of a beach villa is that, as well as offering comfortable accommodation, it may also feature access to a 'private' beach. Villas are highly suitable for families, since they tend to accommodate more than four people.

Guest houses in Mauritius provide either bed and breakfast (B&B) or half-board lodging. As a relatively recent addition to the accommodation offered in Mauritius, there aren't currently too many of them around. However, they are becoming increasingly popular with independent travellers who prefer the freedom of being able to tour the country without having to think too much about advance booking. In the main, guest houses are modestly priced, so make a good option for those wishing to stay on the island on a tight budget.

Apartments offer another alternative to staying in hotels, especially for those visitors who wish to stay longer than a week or two. Many are located in coastal villages.
