Municipal buses, taxis and boats are all popular modes of transport in Buzios. However, for many holiday makers staying in beachfront hotels, the simplest way to travel around is simply on foot, with a selection of decent attractions, restaurants and shops being within easy walking distance.

Buses are an essential mode of transport for most tourists holidaying here and various choices present themselves. Viacao 1001 buses travel between Buzios and Rio de Janeiro up to seven times each day, with this journey lasting no more than three hours. To cover short distances quickly and affordably, the sheer convenience of local taxi transport is hard to beat.

The closest major airport to Buzios is the Galeao - Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport in Rio de Janeiro, some 170 km / 106 miles to the west. This is one the largest and busiest of all Brazil's airports, handling almost 12 million passengers each year and over 120,000 flights. The most prominent airlines include Aerolineas Argentinas (Buenos Aires), Air France (Paris), American Airlines (Miami and New York), British Airways (London), Iberia (Madrid), TAP Portugal (Lisbon and Porto) and United Airlines (Washington D.C.). Most major Brazilian destinations are served by Gol Airlines, TAM Airlines and Webjet, such as Brasilia, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Salvador and Sao Paulo, amongst others. A variety of ground transport is readily available and many hotels in Buzios now offer a transfer service to and from Rio's airport - usually shared vans or buses.

Car Rental

Many tourists staying in Buzios rarely venture far from the main beaches and resorts, and so there is little need to hire a car. However, should you be flying into Rio de Janeiro and wish to drive to your hotel, you will be pleased to find an extensive selection of hire car companies at the airport, including both local firms and international chains. Those with a rental car will have the advantage of not needing to follow bus timetables and be able to freely travel around, to nearby southerly destinations such as Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo and Sao Pedro da Aldeia, as well as Rio das Ostras and Macaé to the north.

Buses and Coaches

As well as the regular buses to Rio, there are many further buses available, heading in both easterly and westerly directions, and operating between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00. The bus station is little more than a stop on the Estrada da Usina Velha and is simple to find, being located just a few blocks away from the Armacao waterfront. Buses travelling to Cabo Frio stop at both the Estrada da Usina Velha and the Avenida Ribeiro Dantas, with this journey lasting approximately one hour.

Taxis and Water Taxis

Taxis can be hailed on the Praca Santos Dumont, or arranged in advance by telephone. A far more enjoyable way to travel around is by water taxi. These small boats operate during daylight hours and sail between Joao Fernandes and Tartaruga. Water taxis regularly pick up people from the pier and beach, and can be quite inexpensive, carrying up to seven passengers.
