The beautiful coastline, natural attractions, water sports and the beaches of Buzios serve as a main draw for the town, while others come here for its shopping and its nightlife.

Scuba diving and snorkelling make for a popular pastime along the coastline of Rio de Janeiro, both for locals and tourists alike. Others come to Buzios for its surfing scene and related attractions around the Praia de Geriba, with surf schools catering well for those new to this sport. Windsurfing is also popular here, especially around the Praia de Manguinhos.


Away from the beaches, there are lots of sightseeing opportunities in Buzios, particularly if you take a walk along the cobbled Rua das Pedras and the adjoining Orla Bardot.

Bus Tours and Tour Operators

There are a number of different bus tours available around this area and provide an easy way to reach nearby beaches, attractions and islands. Based on the Orla Bardot, the Tour Shop offers a very popular service, with open-sided trolley buses connecting a total of 12 beaches around the peninsula. This particular operator also features rafting trips and cruises in glass-bottom boats.

Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

There are two certified dive schools in the town, including the Kybalion Pousada on the Avenida Jose Bento Ribeiro Dantas, where beginner divers can receive tuition and more experienced divers can hire or buy equipment. Boats transport divers to the most notable dive sites, with favourites being located next to Buzios and to the south, around Arraial do Cabo. These include island destinations such as Ancora and Gravata, sea caves and colonised wrecks, teaming with life. Many locals choose to dive around the beaches of Praia do Forno, Praia de Joao Fernandinho, Praia de Joao Fernandes and Praia da Tartaruga. Night dives and speciality courses can also be arranged when required.

Surfing

There are roughly ten different surf schools scattered along the coastline of Buzios, offering instruction for all ability levels. Most surfing lessons tend to take place at the Praia de Geriba, a wide and open beach lending itself to many water sports, including body surfing, boogie boarding and also windsurfing. Geriba Beach lies on the southern side of the peninsula and projects into the Atlantic Ocean in an easterly direction, resulting in reliably strong waves. The Praia de Geriba is also a popular place to watch surfing whilst soaking up the sun and keen surfers can often be seen here, riding the waves from dawn, right through to dusk.

Boat Trips and Cruises

Several local operators provide boat trips and cruises along the coastline, heading to various beaches and islands, located on both the northerly and southerly sides of the peninsula. Schooner tours lasting up to five hours sail on a regular basis, heading off to the Ilha Feia, as well as to the beaches of Praia de Joao Fernandinho and Praia da Tartaruga, serving fresh fruit and refreshments along the way, and often stopping if passengers fancy a quick swim in the ocean. There are also night cruises to nearby destinations such as Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo.

Rua das Pedras

Walking along the cobblestones of the Rua das Pedras is certainly a highlight of any holiday here. Despite its relatively short length, this important thoroughfare is central to shopping and dining in the town, whilst also offering plenty of evening entertainment to enjoy. Leading onto the Orla Bardot, the Rua das Pedras regularly hosts food festivals and live music events in the summer.

Orla Bardot

An easterly continuation of the Rua das Pedras, the Orla Bardot is a charming promenade sandwiched between the scenic areas of Armacao and Ossos. Running alongside the ocean, the Orla Bardot provides the perfect place for a leisurely afternoon stroll and is home to several very realistic, subtle sculptures created by acclaimed Brazilian artist Christina Motta. These include an especially famous statue of Brigitte Bardot, together with a statue of former president Juscelino Kubitschek and a group of fishermen in the water, landing the day's catch.
