Standing alongside the states of Georgia and North Carolina, and also bounded by the Atlantic Ocean, South Carolina is an attractive state, with plenty in the way of tourist attractions. Day trips from Hilton Head are always very popular with holiday makers wishing to experience what the surrounding regions have to offer.

However, if you are based in Hilton Head and are prepared for somewhat longer excursions, then train trips to South Carolina's tourist destinations of Charleston and Myrtle Beach are really quite doable. In Georgia, the attractions of Augusta, Richmond Hill and Savannah are also not especially far from Hilton Head, nor indeed are those of Jacksonville in Florida.


Augusta

The second-biggest city in the state of Georgia and sited roughly 140 miles / 225 km to the northwest of Hilton Head, Augusta is famous for being the home of the annual Masters golfing tournament. This prestigious event takes place each April and attracts the attention of keen golfers from around the world. Aside from the Masters and all of its associated golfing attractions, such as the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame, there are plenty of other sights to see in the city, with the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area and the National Science Center's Fort Discovery being of note. Just a short drive away and in Harlem, the Laurel and Hardy Museum is also worthy of consideration.

Charleston

A friendly Southern-style city, Charleston is brimming with history and attractive antebellum buildings. Situated roughly 112 miles / 180 km to the northeast of Hilton Head, day trips to Charleston are possible with an early start. Tourism is big business in Charleston and almost four million tourists come here annually, enjoying attractions such as the Charleston Museum, the City Hall Gallery, Fort Moultrie, the Fort Sumter National Monument, the South Carolina Aquarium, St. Matthew's German Lutheran Church and the Waterfront Park, next to the harbor.

Greenville

A charming city that you won't find listed on many itineraries, Greenville is actually the biggest city in the Upstate region, and stands around 262 miles / 422 km north of Hilton Head. The city's attractions are quite reasonable, with the Greenville County Museum of Art, and the Bob Jones University Museum and Gallery both standing out in particular. You can also expect to find numerous events and shows taking place at the Bi-Lo Center, at the Center Stage Theater, at the Peace Center and also at the Palmetto Expo Center, the latter of which regularly hosts sizable conventions.

Jacksonville

Lying on the enticing east coast of Florida and approximately 176 miles / 283 km south of Hilton Head Island, Jacksonville is particularly Southern in character and simply enormous in size, being amongst the biggest cities in the USA. St. John's River divides the city and the 1.5-mile / 2-km Southbank Riverwalk is an especially popular attraction. Other tourist highlights include the Adventure Landing and Shipwreck Island Water Park at Jacksonville Beach, the Fort Matanzas National Monument, the Fort Clinch State Park, the Jacksonville Zoological Gardens, the Johnson Memorial Park, the San Marco Theater, and also the city's Museum of Science and History.

Myrtle Beach

At 230 miles / 370 km to the northeast of Hilton Head and still within the state of South Carolina (SC), Myrtle Beach may be too far for a practicable day trip, although serves as a popular weekend getaway and vacation haunt. Myrtle Beach has become something of a leading coastal resort, with sandy beaches and family friendly theme park attractions, such as the Family Kingdom, which resides on the Ocean Boulevard.

Richmond Hill

Richmond Hill is a small city within Bryan County, Georgia, and is just under 60 miles / 97 km to the southwest of Hilton Head. The history of Richmond Hill boasts strong connections to Henry Ford (founder of the Ford Motor Company), with the Ford Plantation next to the Ogeechee River being something of a local landmark. The Richmond Hill Historical Society Museum and Welcome Center has become one of the city's most visited attractions and resides within the old Henry Ford Kindergarten Building, where it is devoted to the history of both the city and Bryan County.

Savannah

Built around the meandering Savannah River and located some 43 miles / 69 km to the west of Hilton Head, in the neighboring state of Georgia, the city of Savannah can be reached in around an hour. Savannah's Historic District is filled with interesting attractions and stands alongside Forsyth Park and the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Old Town Trolley Tours offering an enjoyable way to sightsee in this part of Savannah, as do horse and carriage rides.
