The city of Charleston is home to several excellent art galleries that tend to reflect local history and the environment. Especially noteworthy is the City Hall Gallery, where portraiture is a particular feature and highlights the city's important political role in America's history.

Another commendable gallery in Charleston is the Gibbes Museum of Art, which is located along Meeting Street and within the Historic District, where it is known for its imposing architecture and Tiffany-style dome. The Gibbes Museum of Art houses numerous prints and paintings, with featured artists often having a strong connection to South Carolina.


City Hall Gallery

The City Hall Gallery is home to a fine collection of portraits, including those of numerous famous leaders, the most prominent being George Washington. Located on the outskirts of Washington Park and close to both the South Carolina Historical Society and the Charleston Monument, the City Hall also features a collection of local art from local oil painters.

Gibbes Museum of Art

Situated close to the Circular Congregational Church and the Dock Street Theater, the Gibbes Museum of Art is a comprehensive gallery established in 1905 and housing a range of prints dating from the 18th century onwards. It also contains one of the most extensive miniature portrait collections in the country, with over 400 on display.
Open hours: Tuesday to Saturday - 10:00 to 17:00, Sunday - 13:00 to 17:00

Audubon Gallery

The exhibition space for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, Audubon Gallery features lovely Audubon prints along with hand carved wildlife sculptures and Native American pieces. A further branch is to be found in Chicago, being based on North Michigan Avenue.

Pink House Gallery

Standing on Chalmers Street and within easy walking distance of the City Hall Gallery, the Pink House resides within one of Charleston's oldest buildings, dating back to the beginning of the 18th century. Once a sailor's tavern, the Pink House offers a range of paintings, prints, reproductions and photographs.

Ann Worsham Richardson - Birds I View Gallery

Just a stroll away from the Pink House and sited near to the Fuschia Tea Emporium, the Birds I View Gallery features painting and prints of North American wildlife, as well as their natural habitats. South Carolina's official bird painter, Ann Worsham Richardson is a world-famous artist and has made Charleston her home, where she now runs this popular gallery. Look out for her acclaimed exhibit 'From Hummingbirds to Eagles'.

Wells Gallery

Relocated to Meeting Street in 2009 and now standing alongside the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Wells Gallery displays regular changing works and exhibitions by a range of nationally renowned artists. An additional gallery is based at the Kiawah Island Golf Course, which is around 30 miles / 48 km away and on Sanctuary Beach Drive.
