Hilton Head is the biggest barrier island in the state of South Carolina (SC) and Hilton Head Island is 12 miles / 19 km long by 5 miles / 8 km wide. Full of golf courses and coastal resorts, Hilton Head Island contains a number of private community areas, often referred to as 'plantations'.
