An iconic Hilton Head Island landmark, Harbor Town Lighthouse is famous throughout the United States for appearing on almost every media related to the island. The red and white striped concrete tower affords stunning views of Harbor Town and the bay, and the observation deck houses a quality gift shop. The lighthouse is now part of the Sea Pines Plantation resort and it contains some displays relating to the history of both this important building and the plantation that surrounds it.

Palmetto Dunes Plantation

One of the most popular of Hilton Head's tourist destinations, Palmetto Dunes is world famous for its three championship golf courses and 25-court tennis center. What's less known is that the plantation resort has some lovely beaches and an incredible 11 miles / 18 km of interconnected lagoons, perfect for canoeing, paddle boating, fishing and bird watching. Throw in some trendy shops, excellent accommodation and great restaurants and you have a complete, albeit expensive, vacation attraction.

Audubon Newhall Preserve

This living museum is an enthralling place to explore. The forest extends for 50 acres / 20 hectares and the different species of trees and plants are clearly identified by labels, making the discovery of Hilton Head's Audubon Newhall Preserve a worthwhile and educational experience. The forest is also home to a wide range of fauna, in particular birdlife. The trails are well maintained and marked, and guided tours of the main attractions can be arranged.

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

Contained within the Sea Pines Plantation resort, the Sea Pines Forest Preserve takes up a huge 605 acres / 240 hectares of forests, coastline and lagoons. Wildlife watching is the highlight of this sanctuary, with waterfowl and alligators being the main attractions for nature lovers. This area of Hilton Head Island has ample facilities for camping and there is a complete program of interesting daytime and night time outdoor activities developed by Sea Pines, allowing families to get the most out of their experience at the preserve.

Hunting Island Lighthouse

Set in Huntington Island State Park, this historical lighthouse is a prominent black and white structure that reaches far beyond the heights of Governor's Lighthouse in Cogulna Harbor. The station was first established in 1859 and was deactivated in 1933; it has remained out of operation since. The lighthouse is open for public viewing and is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
