Attractions Nearby Worcester, Day Trips and Excursions

(Worcester, Worcestershire, England, UK)

Birmingham picture showing the Council HouseWorcestershire is surrounded by the six large counties of Herefordshire (west), Gloucestershire (south), Shropshire (north-west), Staffordshire (north), Warwickshire (east) and West Midlands (north-east). Each of these counties has a plethora of excellent attractions, lending themselves to day trips from Worcester, and even short break excursions.

In Worcestershire itself, many attractions are no more than a 30-minute drive from the city of Worcester, such as the town of Bewdley and both its interesting museum and Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Gardens, and Bromsgrove, which is known for its narrow boats and Tardebigge canal lock flight, and its Avoncroft Museum of Buildings.

General Information

The rural market town of Evesham is a similar distance away from Worcester and comes with a historic Almonry building, which is sadly all that still remains of what was once England's third-biggest abbey. To the north, Kidderminster is most likely visited due to its proximity to the moated Elizabethen manor house that is Harvington Hall.

If you are prepared to travel just a little further from Worcester, then the choice of available attractions increases tenfold. Just 40 minutes to the south is the spa town of Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) and its world-famous horse racecourse, which becomes packed each March, when the National Hunt takes place. In the town centre, the Everyman Theatre is possibly of historical interest, since the legendary film star Charlie Chaplin once performed on its very stage. Nearby Cheltenham, the city of Gloucester boasts renovated docks and a stunning cathedral, where some scenes in the much-loved Harry Potter films were actually filmed.

Image of the Bullring Shopping Centre in BirminghamTo the north-east of Worcester and residing in the West Midlands is the iconic city of Birmingham, which is approximately one hour away by road. Birmingham's attractions come thick and fast, and include its contemporary Bullring shopping centre, Cadbury World, Botanical Gardens, National Sea Life Centre and well-preserved Jacobean mansion, Aston Hall. Close to Birmingham and still within the West Midlands is Coventry and its plentiful museums, vibrant cathedral quarter and modern Millennium Place. Leamington Spa is another highlight in the West Midlands and this appealing spa town is full of fine Regency architecture.

Somewhat closer to Worcester are the attractions of Stratford upon Avon, the home town of William Shakespeare. The main places of interest in Stratford are very much Shakespeare related and include Hall's Croft, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Nash's House and New Place, Palmer's Farm (home of the bard's mother, Mary Arden), Glebe Farm, Havard House and Shakespeare's Birthplace. Also within easy reach of Worcester are the towns of Dudley, Ledbury, Nuneaton, Redditch, Solihull, Tenbury Wells and Upton upon Severn, all of which are worthy of closer investigation.
