The possibilities for day trips around Brisbane almost seem to be endless, with your choice of attraction often depending upon how far you are prepared to travel. North Stradbroke Island is especially close and perfect for an excursion, being located on the easterly outskirts of the city and home to some tempting sandy beaches.

Coochiemudlo Island is a little closer to Brisbane and resides within the Toondah Harbour, being just across from Victoria Point, where regular passenger ferries depart. Head to the north and both the Beerburrum State Forest and the Bribie Island National Park come with their own set of natural attractions and plenty of wildlife to spot. Many further islands and beaches are close by, being scattered around Moreton Bay and well connected by public transport. With Australia being such a vast country, if you would like to travel to other significant cities and sights, such as either the spectacular Great Barrier Reef (north) or Sydney (south), then you should consider flying, or prepare yourself for a very long drive (roughly 14 hours for each of these particular destinations).

Coochiemudlo Island

Coochiemudlo Island, often known as simply 'Coochie', is a small island located on the southern side of Moreton Bay. Just a ten-minute ferry ride from Victoria Point, Coochiemudlo is a popular outing from mainland Brisbane and comes with built-up areas, secluded and peaceful beaches, sailing opportunities, cafés, hotels and picturesque views. The majority of the beaches are to be found lining the northern, southern and eastern shores, while the western side of the island boasts dense mangroves. Much native Aussie wildlife lives here and there is a good chance that you will spot kangaroos, cockatoos, emus, kookaburras and maybe even a koala or two.

Bribie Island

Bribie Island is a slender sand island situated on the north side of Moreton Bay, where it measures approximately 34 km / 21 miles in length by around 8 km / 5 miles at its widest point. Featuring several small and charming settlements, including Woorim, Bellara and Bongaree, the north-western coast is where you will find the protected Bribie Island National Park, offering boating, fishing and views of the neighbouring Glass House Mountains. Other attractions include old-fashioned settlements, sandy ocean beaches, cafés and some small seafood restaurants. A number of campsites are present, although you will first need to purchase a camping permit from the Bongaree Caravan Park, which is located on the southern side of the island, just beyond Banksia Beach.
