The parks in Phuket serve a number of purposes, with many being purely for recreation, and others for nature conservation and research.

For a glimpse at Phuket's natural wonders, both the Khao Phra Taew Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sirinat National Park are full of colourful creatures. Those prepared for a half-day boat trip, the Koh Tarutao Islands and their National Marine Park are worth exploring.

Khao Phra Taew Wildlife Sanctuary

Covering almost 5,500 acres / 2,225 hectares and home to a wealth of local flora and fauna, Phuket's stunning Khao Phra Taew Wildlife Sanctuary features lush areas of rain forest. Resembling most people's idea of a jungle, expect to see many tropical palms, monkeys, gibbons and exotic birds, together with many endangered species and a number of particularly beautiful waterfalls.

Phuket Orchid Garden and Thai Village

Those with a love of colourful flowers will enjoy visiting the enormous collection of flowering orchids at the Phuket Orchid Garden. Also onsite is a visitors centre selling a range of local arts and crafts, together with landscaped gardens and many specimen plants. The gardens are just a short drive from Phuket City and lie around 3 km / 2 miles to the north.

Sirinat National Park

Close to Phuket International Airport and covering a staggering area of more than 20,000 acres / 8,000 hectares, the Sirinat National Park encompasses Nai Tang Beach, which stretches for around 13 km / 8 miles. Known for its mangrove forest, saltwater swamps, native animals, walking trails and enormous creepers, many people come here for the bird watching alone.

Koh Tarutao National Marine Park

The Koh Tarutao National Marine Park is a popular excursion from Phuket and comprises a collection of south-eastern islands, which can be reached by regular boat trips. With stunning scenery, beautiful coral reefs and secluded bays, the park also features a number of picture-postcard beaches, lookout points and numerous walking trails.
