Being located on the southeasterly side of Nebraska means that Lincoln is within reasonable proximity to the attractions in the neighboring states of
Iowa,
Kansas and
Missouri. However, there are plenty of possible day trips that are closer to home, such as
Omaha to the northeast and
Fremont to the north.
Tourists looking to venture outside of Lincoln will also find that there are countless state parks, lakes and golf courses within driving distance of the city. The
Pawnee Lake State Recreation Area is a good example, being a mere 15 miles / 24 km away and to the west.

Beatrice to the south,

Millard to the northeast. If you head west along Interstate I-80, you will soon reach the attractions of

At approximately 50 miles / 80 km from Lincoln, the attractions of Omaha are easy to reach by simply following Interstate I-80 for the entire journey. The city of Omaha boasts a population of more than 400,000 people and lots of places of interest. If you have young children with you, then must-sees include the
Henry Doorly Zoo, the
Heartland of America Park, and the
Strategic Air and Space Museum.
Fremont is also in the region of 50 miles / 80 km away and is easy to reach by taking Highway US-77 for the majority of the journey. There are many reasons why day trips to Fremont are popular with those based in Lincoln. More than 20 city owned parks are accompanied by a very noteworthy golf course and a number of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as the
Larson Opera House and the
Dodge County Courthouse. Further attractions here come in the form of the
Fremont Dinner Train, the
Louis E. May Historical Museum and the
Railroad Museum, as well as the
John C. Fremont Days celebrations each July.
Those vacationing in Lincoln and looking for some serious sightseeing should consider a longer excursion or weekend break outside of Nebraska state, crossing the border into Iowa.
Des Moines is a little under 200 miles / 322 km away and comes with good rail connections, a superb selection of attractions and numerous shops to explore.
A similar distance away, only this time to the southeast, is
Kansas City, Missouri. Families planning an excursion to Kansas City may like to pay a visit to the city's zoo, the Worlds of Fun amusement park and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.
