Lincoln Art Galleries

(Lincoln, Nebraska - NE, USA)

The Lincoln Arts Council works hard to encourage a creative and artistic community, supporting local artists and galleries, and promoting all kinds of exhibitions, related events, performance art and shows. On the first Friday of every month, many local galleries display new pieces and in the evening, open their doors and lay on food and drink, and often live music.

The biggest gallery in Lincoln is the Sheldon Museum of Art, which is to be found on the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Here it combines both permanent and temporary exhibits, which are generally of a contemporary nature.

Located on the southern edge of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the Great Plains Art Museum showcases the very best art works of the northern and southern Great Plains. This interesting gallery opened in the year 1981 following the generous donation of numerous paintings, sculptures, sketches and photos, and has subsequently acquired many other pieces created by renowned artists.

Standing close to both the Antelope Creek and the Billy Wolff Trail, the Schleich Red Wing Pottery Museum is a unique attraction boasting in excess of 5,000 pottery pieces.

Opened in the early 1960s, this purpose-built gallery combines the collections of both the university and the Sheldon Art Association, the latter of which was founded all the way back in 1888, when it was initially known as the Haydon Art Club. With more than 12,500 items housed at the Sheldon Museum of Art, this vast collection includes everything from American impressionism themes, early modernism paintings and giant abstract canvasses, to colorful pop art and giant sculptures, which are displayed within the adjacent landscaped garden covering around 1 hectare / 2.5 acres.
