Lincoln Tourist Attractions and Sightseeing

(Lincoln, Nebraska - NE, USA)

Families, sports fans, history buffs and general tourists are all well-catered for when it comes to the attractions of Lincoln.

Lying on the southern side of the city center, the Lincoln Children's Zoo was formerly named the Folsom Children's Zoo and Botanical Garden. This family friendly attraction is fairly compact and covers roughly 4 hectares / 10 acres, being opened in the summer of 1985. It is now called home by more than 300 animals, which between them make up almost 100 different species.

Other options for tourists include the healthy entertainment scene in the form of plentiful theaters, the recreational activities and Nebraskan wildlife found along the MoPac Trail, and sports events staged at either the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Haymarket Park, the Memorial Stadium, the Pershing Center or the Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Theaters and Live Entertainment

Culture and evening entertainment in Lincoln comes in the form of a thriving selection of theaters. The Rococo is a particularly historic venue and dates from 1929, being recently fully restored to its original condition.

At the main stage of the Lied Center for Performing Arts, audiences of some 2,200 people can watch concerts, comedy gigs, dance companies and musicals, such as the recent production of Rock of Ages.

The Haymarket Theater caters for all ages, with past productions including the Wizard of Oz, and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. There are also summer camps and youth programs held here each year.

Movies are regularly screened at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, including the latest films and some less well-known independent movies. Music lovers should look out for performances by the Nebraska Jazz Orchestra and the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, both of which are known to sell out quickly.

The Memorial Stadium now boasts a total capacity topping 85,000 spectators and is where the Nebraska Cornhuskers live (the university's very successful college football team). When a game is taking place, downtown Lincoln virtually empties and becomes something of a ghost town for the duration, although afterwards, traffic congestion quickly becomes a problem, with the crowds leaving and driving home.

MoPac Trail

Address: Lincoln to Wabash, Nebraska (NE), USA
The MoPac Trail makes use of the former Missouri Pacific Railroad track (Omaha Belt Line), which has laid completely abandoned here since the middle of the 1980s and passes by some rather appealing attractions, both man-made and natural. The 4-mile / 6-km section of trail that passes through central Lincoln was acquired by the city in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s, an additional portion of this railway line was purchased, extending the overall length to just over 20 miles / 32 km and connecting Wabash with Lincoln, as well as the neighboring communities of Elmwood, Eagle and Walton. Along the route you can walk, hike, jog, cycle, watch the native Nebraskan wildlife and ride a horse, and in the winter, cross-country skiing is even an option along some stretches.
Open hours: daily
