The art scene in Valencia is thriving, with an enormous selection of galleries and public art museums available. Many of Valencia's best galleries feature free admission and are home to some exceptional and often extremely valuable pieces, meaning that there is no real reason not to visit at least one of two of the best.

The Valencian Institute of Modern Art (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno - IVAM) specialises in contemporary works, while the San Pious V Museum of Fine Arts (Museo de Bellas Artes San Pio V) offers an extensive collection of 15th-century paintings.

Featuring a large collection of paintings, portraits, prints, sculptures, contemporary works of art and local artefacts, the San Pious V Museum of Fine Arts is best known for its superb collection of local 15th-century paintings. Other significant highlights include a gift shop selling a range of prints and postcards, and a library area.

Museum of José Benlliure (Casa Museo de José Benlliure)

Formerly the residence of Valencia's wealthy Benlliures family, this popular art gallery contains many appealing paintings, sculptures, drawings and ceramic works. The museum also features a landscaped garden with shaded seating areas.

Valencian Craft Centre (Centro de Artesania)

Known for its wonderful collection of local ceramics, the Centro de Artesania is home to a range of local arts and crafts, including paintings and jewellery. Many workshops and displays take place here throughout the year.

Valencian Institute of Modern Art (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno - IVAM)

Full of striking contemporary paintings, sculptures and photographs, the Institute of Modern Art contains both permanent and temporary exhibitions of extreme quality. Split into two separate buildings, the Centro del Carmen and the Centro Julio Gonzalez, the museum also features a gift shop, library area, archives, regular workshops and a coffee shop. The Valencian Institute of Modern Art actively promotes the work of local artists at all levels.

Diocesan Cathedral Museum (Museo Catedralicio Diocesano)

Situated within the walls of Valencia Cathedral, this museum was founded in the mid-18th century and contains a plethora of religious artefacts and exhibits, many of which are extremely valuable. Featuring well-preserved paintings, wooden carvings, silver treasures and historical documents, the Diocesan Cathedral Museum is most famous for containing the reputed Holy Grail.

Patriarch Museum (Museo del Patriarca)

Part of Valencia's notable Royal Seminary College of Corpus Christi, the Patriarch Museum can be found in the historic Old Quarter area of Valencia. Founded more than 400 years ago, this impressive museum contains many exceptional paintings, some of which are painted by famous Spanish artists.
