Cambridge Travel and TransportThe city of Cambridge is well served by the public transport system, which includes an excellent network of buses and trains, providing good connections throughout England. Cambridge is located close to many other interesting towns, cities, tourist attractions and important landmarks, and many visitors choose to travel outside of the city, into the surrounding areas. Just 96 km / 60 miles north of London, Cambridge is located in the heart of east England and can be easily reached from throughout the United Kingdom.

Renting a car is often the preferred method of transport for excursions and it is relatively easy to travel around Cambridgeshire by car. There are a number of prominent roads situated on the outskirts, such as the M11 to Bishop's Stortford and Harlow (south), the A14 to Newmarket and Bury St. Edmunds (east) and the A10 to Ely, Downham Market and King's Lynn (north).

Cambridge is served by a number of airports, the closest and most convenient of which Cambridge City Airport (CBG) provides convenient air travel to north England, east England, East Anglia and the city of London. Also, the onsite Cambridge Aero Club features regular pleasure trips over the city and affordable flying lessons. London airports, including Heathrow Airport (LHR), Gatwick Airport (LGW), Stansted Airport (STN) and London City Airport (LCY) are also within easy travelling distance of Cambridge, by either train, coach or car.

Cambridge is just a short journey up the M11 motorway from south England and London. The A1 and M1 motorway travel to the A14 dual carriageway, linking the north of England to Cambridge city centre. From the east, the A14 dual carriageway travels straight into the city. There are a number of major roads in the area and although the traffic can be heavy during peak commuting hours (07:30 to 10:00 and 16:00 to 18:00), driving is rarely problematic.

Many tourists staying in Cambridge choose to rent cars and these are the best method of transport when travelling outside of the city, to explore the surrounding countryside and nearby towns. There are a number of car parks in and around central Cambridge and these offer useful places to park. There are also five highly regarded Park and Ride sites located on the outskirts of the city, providing free car parking and regular bus journeys into central Cambridge. These Park and Ride centres operate seven days a week and are located at Babraham Road, Cowley Road, Madingley Road, Newmarket Road and at Trumington.

Buses and Coaches

Located in Drummer Street, close to the city centre, the bus station provides a wide range of transport options in and around the Cambridge area. Regional buses and coaches travel throughout the city centre and travel further afield, connecting London, the Midlands and East Anglia. Stagecoach Cambus operate a popular Park and Ride service.

Located on the outskirts of the city centre on Station Road, the Train Station is within easy walking distance of central Cambridge and there are also regular buses that travel to the train station. With fast and frequent trains that travel to central London's Liverpool Street and King's Cross train stations in around 50 minutes, Cambridgeshire trains are operated by the West Anglia Great Northern train services. Other train services travel from the Train Station to Birmingham, Bury St. Edmunds, Ely, Ipswich, King's Lynn, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Peterborough and Sheffield.

Punting

Punting is one of the most popular leisure activities in Cambridge and punting on the River Cam when the sun is shining down is one of the most relaxing ways to spend time. There are several punting stations located along the riverside.

Taxis

Taxi cabs in Cambridge are perfect for short trips and are usually reasonably priced. They can be easily caught from the taxi rank outside of the Train Station. Also in quieter areas, taxis can be booked by telephone and there are a number of reputable local companies that your hotel will be happy to recommend. Additional taxi charges in Cambridge are often made for luggage, late-night journeys and extra passengers, while a further charge is often made for working on bank holidays.

Boats and Ferries

Cambridge city centre is situated just 107 km / 67 miles from Harwich, where you can travel by boat to the Hook of Holland, Esberj and Cuxhaven. With excellent rail and train links to the city, this is becoming a popular way to reach Cambridgeshire.

Bicycles

Cycling is a popular pastime in Cambridge and there are plenty of centrally located shops available, providing bike hire by the day or week. Of particular interest, many of the city's cycle trails are actually based on ancient trading routes, which date all the way back to Roman times.
