Housing many historic collections of heritage items and local artefacts, the museums of Hobart are dedicated to everything from folklore and transport, to antiques, the fire service, golf, militaria, politics, dolls and toys. Located in Hobart city centre, the Maritime Museum of Tasmania can be found in the historic Secheron House, which was built in 1831 and is now listed by the Australian National Trust.

Founded in 1983, the Tasmanian Transport Museum is situated in the Glenorchy area of Hobart and is particularly popular with families, being known for its extensive collection of lovingly restored steam locomotives, wooden carriages and regular steam train rides.

Maritime Museum of Tasmania

Celebrating the nautical past of the nearby docklands, the Maritime Museum of Tasmania boasts a variety of exhibitions and displays, including local artefacts and relics, photographs, models, historic documents and general maritime memorabilia. Also of note is the large collection of paintings and the popular gift shop. Nearby attractions include Henslowe Park and Princes Park, as well as a multitude of restaurants lining Hampden Road.

Australasian Golf Museum

Situated outside of the city, in the small town of Bothwell, the Australasian Golf Museum is well worth a visit if you are a keen golfer. Located some 70 km / 43 miles to the north and filled with endless golfing memorabilia, there is also a host of historic golf artefacts, photographs and exhibits. There is even a highly regarded 18-hole golf course close by - the Bothwell Golf Club, which lies off the Highland Lakes Road.

Channel Historical and Folk Museum

The Channel Historical and Folk Museum is situated directly to the south of the city, in the Lower Snug area, between Coningham and Oyster Cove. Featuring a wealth of historic information, other notable collections include photographic displays, a small library, maps and many important documents.

Military Museum of Tasmania

The Military Museum of Tasmania, in central Hobart, is dedicated to the island's military memorabilia from the last two centuries. Housed within the historic Anglesea Barracks, exhibits include a selection of uniforms through the ages, weaponry, large displays, a number of interesting collections and regular guided tours. St. David's Park is just a short distance away, while another useful point of reference is nearby St. Michael's Collegiate School.

Moorilla Museum of Antiquities

The Moorilla Museum of Antiquities, in the northerly suburb of Berriedale, is home to an impressive collection of genuine antiques and historic items. Highlights include Egyptian artefacts, important Roman finds, African antiques and much more besides. With daily guided tours and scenic views of the nearby river, the Moorilla has grown to become one of the city's premier cultural attractions and is highly regarded throughout Tasmania.

Tasmanian Transport Museum

Visitors to the Tasmanian Transport Museum can expect to find a number of historic trams, trolley buses, wagons, tractors, stationary steam engines, steam-train events and regular train journeys, which take place on the first and third Sunday each month.

Tasmanian Fire Service Museum

The Tasmanian Fire Service Museum is part of the Transport Museum complex and was created in 2003. Home to a number of impressive, vintage fire engines and memorabilia from the Tasmanian Fire Services, this attraction also features a collection of uniforms, fire extinguishers and a converted Volkswagen Kombi van, which was originally owned by the Cadburys chocolate company.

Oatlands Doll Museum

The Oatlands Doll Museum is situated within the neighbouring village of Oatlands, and is within easy driving distance of the city centre, being just over 80 km / 50 miles to the north. Housed in a historic windmill, highlights here include around 2,500 dolls in all shapes and sizes - many of which are extremely old, doll accessories and dolls houses from all over the world.

The Tasmanian Distillery and Museum, in the city centre, celebrates the thriving Sullivans Cove Whisky industry. With historic displays, artefacts and information about whisky production and the distillation process, one of the main attractions at the Tasmanian Distillery is of course the well-stocked gift shop, where you are able to purchase souvenir bottles of whisky in various sizes.

Parliament House Museum

The Parliament House Museum is situated in the outstanding Parliament House, in the Salamanca district of Hobart. With many fascinating documents, local artefacts, historic resources and an elaborately decorated interior, this visitors centre is just a small part of the Parliament House complex, which also includes regular sittings by the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council.

Narryna Heritage Museum / Van Diemen's Land Folk Museum

The Narryna Heritage Museum is sited in the Battery Point area and stands within a historic Georgian house, which has been restored with tremendous attention to detail. Recreating life in the mid-19th century, the Narryna Heritage centre includes antique furniture, heritage décor and landscaped gardens, and is actually the oldest folklore attraction of its kind in Tasmania.
