The striking building of the Hiroshima Museum of Art is almost an attraction in its own right and easy to spot, featuring paintings by some famous impressionist artists, while the Prefectural Art Museum stands in the very heart of the city and promotes the works of local artists. Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art

Anyone with even a remote interest in art should not miss this outstanding collection of contemporary works. Situated in Hijiyama Park, the museum building is an attraction in itself, with its design based on that of a traditional Japanese storehouse, and it commands panoramic views over the city. Since its establishment at the end of WWII, the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art has dedicated itself to collecting works of art that are related to the city and region. Highlights include works by acclaimed artists Henry Moore, Andy Warhol and Masuo Ikeda.

Hiroshima Museum of Art

The Hiroshima Museum of Art is housed in one of the most modern looking buildings in the city, which was constructed with the concepts 'love' and 'relaxation' in mind. Built in memory of the victims of the A-bomb and as a symbol of peace, the museum houses artworks by several prominent foreign artists, with works by French Impressionists such as Cezanne, Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh, amongst others. Japanese artworks also feature, covering the Meiji era to the present, as do pieces by the French Romanticists dating from the mid-19th century.

Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum

Conveniently situated downtown, the Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum is one of the most significant art museums in Western Japan. Urban in design, the collection housed inside includes artworks by mostly local artists, while there is also a range of works by artists from across Japan and Asia. The museum's most acclaimed collection is of a group of works dating from the 1920s. After hot-footing it around the museum, visitors can relax in the adjacent Shukkeien Garden.
