Savannah Churches and Cathedrals

(Savannah, Georgia - GA, USA)

Savannah contains a series of places of worship, many of which are of great significance in Georgia. Located on Bull Street and next to Johnson Square is Christ Church, which is actually called home by the state's longest continuous congregation of Christians.

The First African Baptist Church on Montgomery Street is one of Savannah's most notable and was initially established at the very end of the 18th century by a former slave who had managed to buy his freedom. Rebuilt in 1873, the current structure now appears on the prestigious National Register of Historic Places.

Standing alongside Lafayette Square and just a couple of blocks away from the Savannah College of Art and Design, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Roman Catholic Diocese) is another important house of God. Interestingly, the city's early colonial charter prohibited any Roman Catholics from living here, although this soon changed following the American Revolutionary War (1775 to 1783).
