Tallahassee is located on the northerly side of Florida and close to the attractions of both Alabama and Georgia states. However, there are many quality attractions in this part of Tallahassee that are also nearby and highly suitable for day trips or similar excursions.

Within easy reach of Tallahassee are the attractions of the Florida Gulf Coast and Wakulla Springs. Beach lovers favor Panama City, where the beaches and sunny coastline draw visitors from far and wide. Further afield are the beaches of Pensacola.


Florida Gulf Coast

Lying just under an hour's drive to the south of Tallahassee, the Florida Gulf Coast is full of coastal attractions and has understandably become a popular excursion for vacationing tourists. The region offers a plethora of sunny beaches, and is also home to the acclaimed Florida Gulf Coast University, which is close to Fort Myers.

Panama City

Panama City is a popular spring break resort and boasts a stunning sandy coastline, lined with exceptional beaches. Around 100 miles / 161 km to the south-west of Tallahassee and a two and a half hour drive away, Panama City has much more to offer than just beaches. Particularly popular are the family orientated attractions of the Gulf World Marine Park, the Man in the Sea Museum, and the Zoo World Zoological and Botanical Park, while for art lovers, the Visual Arts Center of Northwest Florida is on hand and is dedicated to works of art from across Florida.

Pensacola

A spreading beachfront city lying within the Escambia County, Pensacola was first established just over 450 years ago and currently enjoys a thriving tourist industry. Pensacola attractions are varied and apart from its sun-drenched beaches, vacationers will likely enjoy spending time at the Five Flags Speedway, the Sunset Pier, the Saenger Theater, Fort Pickens and at the Naval Aviation Museum. Particularly prominent is the Pensacola Lighthouse in the Naval Air Station grounds, which was built in the middle of the 19th century and is 52 meters / 170 feet in height. Pensacola is to be found approximately 196 miles / 315 km to the west of Tallahassee and serves as a short break destination, being just that bit too far to make a day trip possible.

Wakulla Springs

At around 15 miles / 24 km to the south of Tallahassee, Wakulla Springs is in fact so close that it is almost considered a suburb. Wakulla Springs is part of the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park and has become a popular day trip destination, being especially close to Crawfordville. The main attractions of Wakulla Springs tend to relate to its rich flora and fauna, and past fossil discoveries of Ice Age mammals within its underwater cave system. Interestingly, it was at Wakulla Springs where a number of the earliest Tarzan movies were made.
