In line with other Florida cities, Pensacola is not short on museums. Tracing history back to the Civil War period as well as documenting life, commerce and industry during the 19th century, the museums of Pensacola provide a fascinating insight into the area's history, culture and heritage.

Particularly notable is the Pensacola Naval Aviation Museum, which takes a look at things from a definite military perspective. Founded in 1962, the Naval Aviation Museum contains a wealth of aerospace exhibits and in excess of 150 restored aircraft and spacecraft, including an impressive collection of Skyhawk and Hercules planes. Children will enjoy visiting the onsite Top Gun Air Combat Simulation Center, where you are able to try your hand at realistic flight simulators.


Civil War Soldiers Museum

The Civil War Soldiers Museum was founded in 1991 and here you can see the private collection of Dr. Norman West Haines Jr., which includes various Civil War artifacts and interesting exhibits documenting the period and the city's participation in the war.

Museum of Commerce

The Museum of Commerce offers visitors a chance to view a replica of a turn-of-the-century Pensacola street including a toy store, hardware shop, print shop and other businesses. Formerly a commercial warehouse in the 1900s, the museum guards the entrance to the Historic Pensacola Village.

Naval Aviation Museum

The city's huge Naval Aviation Museum is the second largest in the US and contains many important aircraft, as well as a large collection of military memorabilia that will please any aviation enthusiast. A good selection of souvenirs can be picked up at the gift shop. This attraction comes highly recommended and can easily fill an entire afternoon if you explore at a leisurely pace. Look out for the IMAX theater and also the regular flight displays by the Blue Angels (the US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron), which take place each Tuesday and Wednesday morning from March through November.

Museum of Industry

Located at the Historic Pensacola Village, the Museum of Industry houses many interesting exhibits on early industries in West Florida. The displays highlight the fishing, brick-making, lumber and railroad industries that were largely responsible for the 19th-century industrial boom and visitors can explore the era from a variety of perspectives through photographs, tools and equipment.

Showcasing three different exhibitions each year, this fascinating cultural attraction is run by the Pensacola Historical Society, with a focus on Pensacola's history. The changing exhibits at the Pensacola Historical Museum give visitors a chance to explore the area's history and heritage, while there is also an onsite store where you can pick up books, souvenirs and replicas.
