The city of Newcastle has excellent sports facilities, including a wide range of popular Newcastle spectator sports, such as rugby and cricket. There are also good sports facilities in Newcastle for participants, such as golf courses, tennis courts, central badminton courts, popular swimming pools, modern fitness centres and gyms. The local Newcastle newspapers provide a useful sports section that regularly lists daily and weekly local Newcastle sports events, which are held in and around the city centre.

The River Tyne runs straight through the centre of Newcastle and is a particularly scenic area for walking and cycling in Newcastle. There are also a number of pubs along the way, close to the riverside.

Newcastle United, Newcastle's premiership football club, plays regular home games at St. James's Park Stadium, which seat almost 40,000 people. With a large number of loyal supporters, tickets to Newcastle United Football Club matches should always be booked in advance. St. James's Park Stadium is the second largest football stadium in the United Kingdom, holding around 52,000 people. It is also the oldest football stadium in the North East, and the first game of football was played here more than 125 years ago.

Rugby is an increasingly popular spectator sport in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Newcastle's leading rugby team is the Newcastle Falcons. Playing regular matches at Newcastle's impressive Kingston Park Stadium, the Newcastle Falcons usually attract large crowds.

Athletics

The all-seater Gateshead International Stadium hosts many major British and International athletics events and has excellent sporting facilities.

Newcastle's premier basketball team is the Newcastle Eagles and they play regular matches at the Metro Radio Arena, formerly known as the Telewest Arena, close to Redhrugh Bridge.
