The Landmark of Earl Grey's Monument
The Earl Grey's Monument is an iconic structure in Newcastle and although the city has well and truly reinvented itself in recent years, becoming a modern and trendy city, this tall column provides a taste of the past. It can be found at one end of Grey St. and was erected in 1838. I understand that it has quite a history. It was definitely worth finding if you are looking for the main sights of Newcastle. It is a very photographed site and often appears on postcards.

A Visit to Saltwell Park in Newcastle
We spent a morning visiting Saltwell Park, which is quite close to Newcastle city centre and apparently recently won a big aware for being the 'Best Park' in the UK. It had all of the required elements of a traditional park, like a big lake with boats, a pretty rose garden, and even some animals. There were also a lot of listed buildings and a restored mansion, which was unfortunately closed on the day we were there.

Ice Skating in Newcastle City Centre
From early December to the end of February, the city now sees the regular arrival of an outdoor ice skating rink. on Times Square It has now become quite a tradition in the city and is always busy, so you may need to wait for your turn and skate hire. It stay open until quite late and has a coffee shop if you need to warm yourself up, or nurse your bruises after your seeion - like I did anyway! XXX
