Located around 186 km / 116 miles to the east of Linz, Vienna can be reached in around two hours and is laced with exceptional attractions, both old and new.

Graz is also relatively close to Linz and is the second-largest city within Austria. Those with a love of music will find the many attractions in Salzburg which relate to both Mozart and 'The Sound of Music' quite compelling, unique, and not to be missed. Alternative, head south an enjoy the spectacular views and picture-postcard lakes around Salzkammergut.

Vienna

Vienna is one Austrian destination not to miss and is the capital city and is brimming with attractions. The city is easy to reach from Linz by train and is steeped in culture, being home to the famed Burgtheater (Imperial Court Theatre), which ranks amongst the world's best theatres and dates back to the 1740s. With many truly splendid and ostentatious buildings, along with some beautifully landscaped gardens, Vienna's main landmarks include St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom), the Hofburg (Imperial Palace), Kaisergruft (Imperial Vault) and Museum Quarter.

Graz

Graz has much to offer tourists in the way of historical attractions and sights to see. Central Graz is dominated by its Schlossberg hill and castle, which can be reached by taking the extremely scenic Schlossbergbahn Funicular Railway. Also of interest in Graz is the hard-to-miss Kunsthaus Art Gallery and its bubble-shaped architecture, and the Landeszeughaus Museum of Armoury, which is the biggest of its kind in the world. Graz is just about close enough to Linz for a day trip and lies some 220 km / 137 miles to the south-east.

Salzburg

One of the most visited of all Austria's cities, Salzburg lies around 135 km / 84 miles to the south-west of Linz. The birthplace of Mozart around 250 years ago, visitors to Salzburg are always interested to learn more about this world-famous composer and visit the Mozarts Wohnhaus (Mozart House and Museum). Others choose to spend time in Salzburg for a completely different reason, touring the many locations used in the popular family movie 'The Sound of Music'. The centre of Old Town Salzburg is filled with historical attractions and has become an important UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the Residenzplatz being a good place for a wander.

Sankt Pölten (St. Pölten)

Sankt Pölten is a much-visited city and is to be found within the Austrian State known simply as Lower Austria, where it has become the capital city. The city of Sankt Pölten is steeped in history and is based on the actual site of Aelium, an ancient Roman city. Summer is always a great time to visit Sankt Pölten, since a free tourist train travels around the city and links the most interesting attractions and landmarks, such as the Klangturm tower and the nearby buildings of the Lower Austrian Parliament.
