Mozart has long been a major drawcard for those visiting Salzburg and his strong presence is reflected within the city's numerous museums and interesting art galleries. Both the Mozarts Geburtshaus (Mozart Museum) and Mozarts Wohnhaus (Mozart House and Museum) are two of the most popular and remember the early years of this famous composer, before Mozart actually left Salzburg, aged just 24 years of age.

Combined tickets to both the Geburtshaus and Wohnhaus are available, the latter of which is far more comprehensive and also home to the fascinating Mozart Ton und Filmarchiv (Mozart Sound and Film Archive). Located on the Residenzplatz, the Salzburg Residenzgalerie (Residenz Gallery) contains a wealth of Dutch and Flemish paintings, which are displayed within the archbishops' extravagant Baroque state rooms and dates from the 16th and 17th centuries.


One of the very best art galleries in Salzburg is without doubt the Museum de Moderne Rupertinum (Museum of Modern Art), where some of Austria's finest contemporary art works can be enjoyed. For something quite different, pay a trip to the Stille Nacht Museum Salzburg (Silent Night Museum), which celebrates this world-famous Christmas carol, known to originate close by, in the neighbouring parish of Oberndorf.
