One of the main galleries is the quite simply stunning Christchurch Art Gallery (Te Puna o Waiwhetu), which is a magnificent contemporary building in its own right and quite impossible to miss, being filled with more than 5,000 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures. Quite different in its appearance and ethos is the Christchurch Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA), where some 400 different artists are exhibited each year. This is also the place to come if you are in need of advice relating to fine art, including valuations, sales and education.

Situated in the city centre, on the corner of the Worcester Boulevard and Montreal Street, the spectacular Christchurch Art Gallery is one of the city's newest and largest, being constructed in 2003 to replace the Robert McDougall Gallery. The Art Gallery is without doubt the premier art space throughout Canterbury and features numerous galleries spread around three separate floors, which are named the Touring Exhibition, the Borg Henry, the Ravenscar Gallery for New Zealand Art, the William Sutton, the Sir Robertson and Lady Stewart, and the Contemporary Collections.

Housed in a breathtaking building, with striking modern architecture, other attractions here include a large auditorium area, many temporary exhibitions, a well-stocked shop, a library, a restaurant and a popular community sculpture garden. Cathedral Square is just a matter of minutes away, along with numerous large hotels and reliable restaurants.

One of the leading modern art galleries in Christchurch, the Centre of Contemporary Art can be found in the city centre, often being abbreviated to simply 'CoCA' for short. Featuring several separate art galleries, a large permanent collection of contemporary art works - including both paintings and sculptures, and many temporary exhibitions, the Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA) actively promotes local New Zealand artists.

Galleria Arts Centre

Located in the heart of the city centre and close to Christ's College, the Galleria Arts Centre is conveniently within walking distance of the Christchurch Art Gallery (Te Puna o Waiwhetu). Built in 1874 as part of the Canterbury University complex, the Galleria Arts Centre contains a number of different studio spaces, restaurants, cafés and handicraft shops. This popular complex has become an extremely important arts and crafts centre, enjoying especially high visitor numbers at the weekend.

Brooke Gifford Gallery

Located on Manchester Street and next to Moorhouse Avenue, the Brooke Gifford Gallery sells a host of different paintings, sculptures, ceramics and prints. With around 20 temporary exhibitions each year, the Brooke Gifford is always keen to promote local New Zealand artists. Families may also like to check out the nearby Science Alive attraction, which also goes by the name of the New Zealand Science and Technology Centre.

Dobson Bashford Gallery

Full of excellent examples of contemporary art works, including large paintings, sculptures and colourful prints, the Dobson Bashford Gallery is sited in the centre and boasts many frequent exhibitions. Just a few blocks to the west, visitors often like to visit Hagley Park and its Botanic Gardens.

Fishers Fine Arts, in western Christchurch, is a particularly historic and notable commercial space in the city and is home to some truly exceptional paintings and sculptures, with regular temporary exhibitions throughout the year, attracting artists from all over the world. Nearby attractions include the Riccarton Bush and Anselm House.

The Jonathan Smart Gallery is a large commercial venue, specialising in contemporary and modern art. Exhibiting the work of local Canterbury and New Zealand artists, the Jonathan Smart can be found on the High Street, between Lichfield Street and St. Asaph Street, near to the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.
