You must go to the Forbidden City
In my mind, there really are four things that you simply cannot miss if you are coming to Beijing. The Forbidden City is certainly one of them. I class the other three as the Great Wall of China, the Summer Palace, and also the Temple of Heaven. There are of course a lot of other sights, sounds, temples, shrines and monuments to enjoy, but if my time was limited, I'd make sure not to miss that out at any cost, under any circumstance.

Shopping in Beijing at the Xiushui Silk Market
You should come here even if your not intending to buy anything, although it's quite likely that you will end up with at least one of two small items. The Xiushui Silk Market comes highly recommended by me and is on the Xiushui Shichang. Get ready to do some haggling - it's all part of the fun.

Around Tiananmen Square
Tiananmen Square is a very famous part of Beijing and you will be able to read so much about it when you prepare for your holiday. Just a short distance to the north are three beautiful lakes, offering a constrast to the busy city. These are called the Back Lakes and are called the Hou Hai, Qian Hai and Xi Hai . They are completely manmade and were constructed in the 14th century so that barges transport goods into the Forbidden City.
