Charleston Hotels and Accommodation

(Charleston, South Carolina - SC, USA)

The accommodation residing within the historical downtown district of Charleston is a particularly attractive choice, being close to the action. However, these centrally located hotels tend to be amongst the most expensive in Charleston, due to their convenient location.

Lodging rates tend to rise somewhat at the weekend and also during the biggest of the city's events, such as the Spoleto Festival USA each May and the Taste of Charleston extravaganza each October, which reliably attracts around 10,000 people. The price of accommodation is also greatly influenced by the season, with hotels reducing their rates by 50 percent or more during the quiet winter months.

If you are prepared for a short commute to the attractions of Charleston, you may well like to consider staying in one of the neighboring resorts, such as Folly Beach, the Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island and Mount Pleasant.

Where to Stay

Where you choose to stay in Charleston really does depend upon your budget. Some of the cheapest accommodation comes in the form of the city's popular Notso Hostel on Spring Street, which stands on the northerly side of the Medical University of South Carolina and within the peaceful Canonborough district. Alternatively, consider the plentiful chain hotels and motels lining the surrounding highways, such as the recommended Economy Inn on River Avenue and the Sleep Inn on the Savannah Highway US-17S. Some visitors looking for the ultimate in Southern charm and hospitality choose to stay at a small family run B&B, where there are often no more than a couple of guest rooms.

There are also some fairly decent two-star hotels based within easy driving distance of the Charleston International Airport (CHS), which is situated only 12 miles / 19 km to the northwest. Airport accommodation includes the nearby Rodeway Inn on Dorchester Road and the Inn at Middleton Place on Ashley River Road.

Highly recommended in the city center is the three-star Holiday Inn Historic District on Calhoun Street, which is a mere stroll away from the South Carolina Aquarium and opposite Marion Square. Close by and on Spring Street, the Best Western Charleston Downtown is near to the marina and the Savannah Highway US-17. With waterfront views, the Courtyard by Marriott on Lockwood also offers downtown accommodation and stands right next to the meandering Ashley River.

A number of extra features are always available at top-end hotels in Charleston, including spacious suites with exceptional cityscape views. Luxury accommodation in the city is sited around East Bay Street, Wentworth Street and North Market Street, which is where the boutique-style Planters Inn awaits. Highly rated by Condé Nast Traveler as being amongst North America's finest hotels, the Charleston Place on Meeting Street is also very worthy of consideration if your lodging budget permits.
