Charleston is somewhat of a regional travel and transportation hub, making it relatively easy to get to. It is serviced by Highway US-17 and Interstate I-26, heading northwest to southeast and ending in Charleston.
The city's international airport offers frequent flights across the country and has regular shuttle services that travel east into the city, while Amtrak trains also stop in North Charleston.

Charleston International Airport is situated 12 miles / 19 km to the northwest of the city, on the Interstate I-26, where it serves regular flights to and from major destinations across the country. Shuttles, bus transport and taxi travel are all available to whisk passengers into the city.

Car Rental
Car rental is available at the airport and at various points throughout the city. Driving around Charleston is fairly straightforward, with the Interstate I-26 functioning as the main road artery in and out of the city. Hiring a car is especially handy if you are keen to travel along the South Carolina coastline or one of the many plantations surrounding the city.
Buses and Coaches
Greyhound coaches serve Charleston, offering various services to major destinations across the country. Greyhound buses are cheap, but they are not the most comfortable way to travel. Charleston Area Regional Transport Authority (CARTA) buses crisscross the city on a regular basis from 05:35 to 22:00, while shuttle buses in the downtown area travel to the main centrally located destinations.
Trains
Amtrak trains stop in North Charleston on a regular basis, as part of the East Coast route from Boston to Miami. From here, bus and taxi connections are available and travel to your hotel or other points of interest across the city.

Taxis are readily available at Charleston Airport and throughout the city, and are ideal for short hops.
