Getting Around, Paraty Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

The historic town of Paraty is relatively compact and easy to travel around on foot. Much of the city centre remains pedestrianised and traffic free, although taxi transport is permitted in some areas, as well as traditional horse and carts.

Regular ships and cruise liners arrive in Paraty from destinations such as Angra dos Reis, the Ilha Grande and Rio de Janeiro, while long-distance bus transport also provides an easy way to travel into Paraty from other Brazilian states. If you are planning to explore the coastline, then car rental is often the preferred option.

The BR-101 is a major highway that runs through the town, heading both to the south-west (passing Ubatuba, Caraguatatuba and Sao Sebastiao), and to the north-east (past Angra dos Reis, Mangaraatiba, Itaguai, Sao Joao de Meriti, Duque de Cazias and Rio de Janeiro). Buses and Coaches

The town's bus station is located on the western side of the Old Town, on the Rua Jango Padua. Bus transport is a popular and easy way to reach the top beaches and outlying resorts, with the main bus companies being Colitur, Costa Verde and Reunidas. Regular buses travel to and from the beaches of Trindade and further afield. Bus tickets can be purchased as you board.

Those planning to travel further afield will find long-distance buses with air conditioning connecting nearby Brazilian towns and cities such as Angra dos Reis (two hours), Caraguatatuba (two hours and 30 minutes), Rio de Janeiro (four hours), Sao Paulo (six hours) and Ubatuba (one hour and 30 minutes).

Taxis

Taxis and shuttle vans can be arranged for both short and longer journeys. Most hotels can book taxis to collect you from the airports at either Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo, and although this is not the cheapest way to travel, it is a safe and easy way to arrive and start your holiday, without any hassle. Taxis and vans are all the more affordable when costs are shared between groups of other travellers.
