Paraty Art Galleries

(Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

During the town's past colonial period, many artists came to Paraty to live and to paint the scenery, such as the cobbled streets, the characterful architecture, the waterfront views and the Costa Verde landscape. Today, artists still come to Paraty and the town now features a number of commercial galleries and art museums, exhibiting not only paintings and sculptures, but also ceramics, jewellery and traditional handicrafts created by native Indians.

A good selection of art galleries is spread around the Centro Historico area of Paraty. Those interested in religious art should pencil in a trip to either the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios on the Praca Monsenhor Hélio Pires, or the Igreja Santa Rita dos Pardos Libertos on the Rua Santa Rita, the latter of which is home to the popular Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art).

Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art) / Igreja Santa Rita dos Pardos Libertos

Address: Rua Santa Rita, Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, BR
The Igreja Santa Rita dos Pardos Libertos is an attractive church and stands on the Rua Santa Rita, close to the Praca da Bandeira, where it houses a notable Museum of Sacred Art. Although the museum is on the small side, it is worthy of a mention and contains some impressive religious art works, together with beautifully carved woodwork on the altars and doors. The church itself is also likely to be of interest and was completed in the early 1720s, catering to a congregation of people with mixed black and European white ancestry.
