Attractions Nearby Paraty, Day Trips and Excursions

There are so many wonderful attractions just a day trip away from Paraty that you will really need to plan your time well, choosing the most appealing excursions. These attractions range from hiking trails through the Parque Nacional de Serrada Bocaina (Serra da Bocaina National Park), to 'cachaca' distilleries and endless beaches just a short drive from Paraty.

A number of stunning natural attractions are close to Paraty, including the magnificent Cachoeira da Andorinhas (Swallow Waterfall). The Andorinhas Waterfall is to be found splashing down a section of the Itaimbezinho canyon. Created by the Perdizes River, the falls can be reached along the Vertice Trail, which is a popular route for hikers. Cachoeira da Andorinhas literally means the 'Swallow Waterfall', being named after the small cave below, which is regularly frequented by large numbers of swallows. Be sure to leave time to also pay a visit to the nearby Cachoeira Tres Quedas (Three Waterfalls).


General Information

A popular weekend excursion for Rio residents, the town of Angra dos Reis lies approximately 97 km / 60 miles to the north-east of Paraty and is surrounded by literally hundreds of tempting beach attractions and islands. The Ilha Grande is one island that stands out in particular, being known for its hiking trails, picture-postcard scenery and isolated beaches.

At just over 10 km / 6 miles inland from Paraty, the Cachoeira Tobaga (Tobaga Waterfall) is simply breathtaking and this enormous naturally eroded sheet of rock makes for the perfect jungle water slide. In fact, this setting is so special that it was featured in scenes from the 1985 award-winning movie, 'The Emerald Forest'. Local youngsters regularly come here to surf down the slide, although this activity is extremely dangerous and not recommended.

Residing within the neighbouring state of Sao Paulo, the town of Ubatuba is some 74 km / 46 miles to the south-west of Paraty and home to almost 100 different beaches and endless related attractions. If you just have time to visit one beach, then make it one of those based around the village of Trindade, which comprises the beaches of Cachadaco, Cepilho, Meio and Ranchos. Trindade is well connected by bus and around 25 km / 16 miles to the south of Paraty. Also consider topping up your tan on the very accessible and tranquil Praia de Paraty Mirim (17 km / 11 miles) or the Praia do Sono (35 km / 22 miles), both of which lie to the south-east.
