Paraty Tourist Attractions and Sightseeing

(Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)

The innumerable tourist attractions of Paraty often relate to its plentiful surrounding beaches, which offer not only a place to sunbathe and swim, but are also suitable for snorkelling and scuba diving. Sightseeing boat trips around the Bay of Ilha Grande are always popular, as are the adjacent hiking trails through the Mata Atlantica (Atlantic Rainforest).

Tourists staying in Paraty at the time of a full moon may be able to witness a rather unique attraction, created by the rising tide. As the level of the sea water begins to rise, the historical centre of the town quickly floods for a short period of time. Although the flood is only temporary and rarely more than just a few inches, a number of local traders put out specially made bridges so that pedestrians can cross the flooded streets without getting wet.

Caminho do Ouro / Trilha do Ouro (Gold Trail)

Address: Paraty, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, BR
When gold was discovered in the mountains of Minas Gerais at the very end of the 17th century, Paraty quickly became an important harbour, allowing goods to be easily shipped to Rio de Janeiro, and ultimately to Portugal. This 'Gold Rush' soon led to the creation of a Gold Trail, or as it is known in Portuguese, the Caminho do Ouro. Stretching for approximately 1,200 km / 746 miles, the Gold Trail was lined with large stones and originally linked Paraty with Diamantina, via both Ouro Preto and Tiradentes. Subsequent pirate attacks on the gold ships greatly affected the mining industry, although gold was still successfully mined here until the late 18th century, when supplies dwindled. Although much of the original Gold Trail has fallen into disrepair, two large sections have been restored and due to their close proximity, are ideal for tourists looking for some scenic hiking trails.
