Lovers of horticulture should be sure to visit both the Palm Gardens (Palmengarten) and the neighbouring Frankfurt Botanical Gardens (Botanischer Garten), where many specimen plants are to be found, both outside and within huge glasshouses.

For recreational spaces and open areas of lawn, Vine Park (Rebstockpark) and Rothschild Park (Rothschildpark) are great places for picnicking, strolling and generally relaxing. Frankfurt's main parks and gardens are displayed below.

The Frankfurt Botanical Gardens are perfect for plant lovers and those with a love of horticulture, although even visitors without green fingers will be sure to enjoy the colourful displays and endless flowers. Located within the Westend area of the city, the gardens are split into themed areas and maintained by the local university (Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt), with highlights including many tropical rainforest plants and exotic species, housed within climate-controlled greenhouses. The Botanical Gardens stand directly next to the Palmengarten.

Vine Park (Rebstockpark)

Very much a family attraction, Rebstockpark lies on the western side of the city. With endless pleasant picnic spots, a swimming pool and large open spaces, the park dates back around 50 years and is extremely well used.

Nature lovers shouldn't miss out on the opportunity to visit the popular Palmengarten, where more than 2,000 different species of palm tree are available for viewing. The garden has a number of greenhouses in which an interesting variety of plant specimens can be found. The tropical greenhouse is amongst the main highlights, with its authentic jungle environment. Tours of the facility are available, with other highlights including formal gardens, rose bushes, a boating pond, a children's playground and an autumn flower show.

Rothschild Park (Rothschildpark)

Rothschild Park is not far from Frankfurt city centre, and yet this peaceful spot could almost be a million miles away, if you were to ignore the nearby skyscrapers. Full of mature trees, which provide welcomed shady spots on the hottest days, Rothschild Park is a popular haunt with locals, especially as lunchtime approaches. Plenty of benches are scattered around the park should you wish to sit down and enjoy the surrounding parkland scenery.

People's Niddatal Park (Volkspark Niddatal)

A huge parkland sited on the northern suburbs of Frankfurt, Volkspark Niddatal is a great place to escape from the busy city centre. The park itself encompasses a particularly diverse landscape, with woodland areas, meandering rivers and well-maintained gardens. Trails are available for cyclists and joggers.
