Munich Churches and Cathedral

Religion has long been an important part of Munich and this is reflected in the city's many churches, chapels and stunning cathedral. Munich Cathedral, or Frauenkirche as it is known locally, is a magnificent Gothic-style church and much loved by the city's locals.

St. Peters Church (St. Peterskirche) is also particularly impressive and many people simply visit St. Peters Church to climb to tall tower to enjoy the scenery.

An iconic image of Munich and famed for its two dome-topped brick towers, construction of the cathedral began in the latter part of the 15th century and was finally completed some 20 years later, when it opened with grand celebrations and rapture. Along with the New Town Hall, the cathedral and its imposing architecture dominates Munich city centre. This will always be the case, since the city now prohibits any buildings of more than 100 metres / 328 feet in height.

Located on the southern side of the Marienplatz, St. Peters Church boasts an eye-catching Gothic-style exterior, with definite Baroque influences inside. With more than 300 steps, the climb to the top is well worth the effort, affording spectacular views of the Munich cityscape.
