In particular, several new art museums have sprung up in Nice over the past thirty-odd years, attracting many modern art lovers to the city.

Especially popular is the Nice Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux Arts), which is filled with quality pieces and historic art works. The main art galleries are given below.

Matisse lived in Nice from 1917 until his death in 1954. Housed in a grand 17th-century mansion, this museum has a large permanent collection of works by the artist. These range from some of his best-known works through to lesser known pieces in a wide variety of media. Temporary exhibits are housed in the basement building of the Musée Matisse.

Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain - MAMAC (Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art)

Nice's Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain, often referred to as simply 'MAMAC', puts the city firmly on the map of modern art. Exhibits at this art museum include avant-garde American and French art from the 1960s onwards. The gallery also features the work of some of the world's best-known pop art masters, including Warhol and Aman. The building is worth a visit in its own right, with its vast, airy galleries, glass walkways and even a rooftop garden.

Musée des Beaux Arts (Museum of Fine Arts)

Well worth a visit is Nice's fine art museum. Housed within a splendid villa built at the end of the 19th century, the building more closely resembles 17th-century Italianate architecture. Over the years, donations of works of art, including some sent from the Louvre in Paris by Napoleon III, have built up into a fine collection of work dating from the 15th to the 20th centuries. Amongst others at the Musée des Beaux Arts, works on display include those of Nice-born Dufy, Chéret and Kees Van Dongen.

Musée International d'Art Naïf Anatole Jakovsky

Housed in the former residence of the famous Coty perfume family, Chateau Sainte Hélène has been transformed into an international museum of art, known as the Musée International d'Art Naïf Anatole Jakovsky. Around 600 pieces of art naïf, are amongst the museum's collections of paintings, sculptures and drawings, including work by Vivin, Rimbert, and Bauchant.
