Mont Saint Michel Events and Festivals

(Mont Saint Michel, Normandy, France)

Picture of arriving bus load of touristsThe medieval island of Mont Saint Michel is at its most magical during the summer months, when there are plenty of things to do and events to see, both day and night. A number of seasonal festivals take place at this time of the year.

Night visits to the Mont Saint Michel Abbey are always extremely popular in the summer and visitors can expect some dramatic lighting effects and enchanting music. In fact, at night fall, the main buildings of Mont Saint Michel, including the ramparts, are illuminated with bright lights and from the mainland, the view looks nothing short of spectacular - something well worth bringing your camera for.

If you are simply looking to relax after a day of sightseeing, then the musical evenings regularly taking place at the piano bar located within Mother Poulard's Inn (Mère Poulard) are events always well received, both with visitors and locals alike. Mont Saint Michel's very own Night Club 21 also offers after-hours entertainment, while if gambling is more your thing, there are no less than three casinos close by, in the neighbouring towns of Dinard, Granville and St. Malo.

Every other year during the third week of July, the Fete des Remparts is held and if you are lucky enough to be here when this festival is in full swing, you can expect medieval-style banqueting, jousting, markets and a grand fireworks display. On a more regular basis, Mont Saint Michel's weekly market is always a crowd puller and takes place each Thursday, on the Place du Guesclin and also the Place du Champ.
