Getting Around, Turku Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Turku, Finland Proper, Finland)

City waterfront photoAs with many of the cities within Finland, central Turku is by no means expansive and well suited to those who prefer to travel on foot. Many sights and restaurants are just a short walk away from each other and based around the market square (Kauppatori) and along the banks of the River Aura, although public transport in the form of buses is on hand in Turku, suiting those who need to travel just that little bit further.

City bus transport is frequent and most tickets remain valid for two hours, from the time of purchase. The main bus routes in Turku travel around much of the city and include the railway station to Kauppatori, and the harbour to Kauppatori, along with the airport itself. Turku's harbour is especially important and has become a major gateway into Finland, with ferry transport regularly arriving from Sweden.

Over 375,000 travellers currently use Turku Airport to reach this part of Finland, with flights connecting a number of prominent European capital cities, such as both Copenhagen and Stockholm. Domestic flights operate daily and fly to many Finnish cities, such as Helsinki, Tampere, Rovaniemi and also Oulu. Transport connections consist of taxis and buses, which travel to the central bus station, Kauppatori train station and the harbourfront.

Car Rental

Visitors who fly into Turku Airport often choose to hire a car and drive into the city. There are also a number of car hire companies around the city, on main streets such as the Käsityöläiskatu and the Sirkkalankatu. A speedy motorway now links the city with Helsinki, with an average journey time of between 90 minutes and two hours. Bear in mind that the roads around Turku can become busy at around 08:00 and again at 20:00, when the morning and evening ferries depart, and again in the afternoons, around 15:30. Outside of these hours, traffic conditions are rarely problematic, although empty parking spaces are not always easy to locate.

Trains

Home to the main rail terminus for Finland's south-eastern railway line, Turku is well connected to this part of the country. The railway station is just a stone's throw to the north-east of Turku city centre. Many regular trains connect the ferry harbour, and also travel to the Kupittaa train station, which is located on the city's easterly outskirts. Express 'Pendolino' trains are always popular and connect cities such as Helsinki (two hours), Oulu (between six and nine hours), Rovaniemi (around ten hours) and also Tampere (one and three quarter hours).
