Turku Shopping and Districts

(Turku, Finland Proper, Finland)

Picture of central shopping mallShopping in Turku can be an extremely pleasant way to spend an afternoon. The market place within central Turku, next to the Kauppiaskatu, is always buzzing and regularly features market traders selling their fresh produce, while the flea markets provide a good place to pick up some rather inexpensive gifts to remember your time in Finland.

The Stockmann department store on Yliopistonkatu is always a reliable spot to start your shopping trip in Turku and if you are lucky, you may well time your visit with one of its seasonal sales, when priced are slashed.

Close by, one of the best places for fashion shopping is along the Eerikinkatu, the Slottsgatan and the Linnankatu.

Where to Shop

Also along the Eerikinkatu is Turku's ever popular Hansa Shopping Centre / Hansa Emporium (Hansakortteli), which is home to more than 150 different shops and eateries, together with department stores, a cinema complex and many speciality stores. Directly opposite and rather more historic is the Turku Market Hall, which features two corridors crammed with interesting shops selling both food and souvenirs.

Also of interest is the permanent flea market, which resides within the Itäharju district, on the easterly side of central Turku. As with many large Finnish cities, Turku has followed the trend and set up a number of out-of-town shopping centres, with a good choice of stores around the northerly Satakunnantie.
