Busy A-roads provide a quick way to travel into Lincoln if you have a car and are also regularly plied by National Express bus and coach transport.

In central Lincoln itself, city buses are on hand for short journeys, together with taxi transport. Arriving in Lincolnshire with your own vehicle will allow you to make the very most of your stay in this area. Lincoln is easy to travel to by road, being situated on the A46, between Nottingham and Grimsby, in the centre of the A15. Lincoln is encircled by a series of small roads, while the closest motorways are sited on the outskirts of Lincolnshire, with the M180 being picked up at Scunthorpe (north), the M18 passing Doncaster (north-west) and the M1 skirting Chesterfield and Sheffield (west).

Various car parks stand in the city centre, being located around Lincoln Castle, the Lawn, next to the Theatre Royal, on West Parade, at the bus station on Broadgate, at the railway station on St. Mary's Street, and alongside the Brayford Waterfront. In December, a seasonal park and ride service operates, providing the easiest way to travel to the city's acclaimed Christmas Market.

Buses and Coaches

City bus transport in Lincoln is efficient and operates from both the city's bus and train stations, travelling between the cathedral and also the lower area. Local buses are operated by the Lincolnshire Roadcar Company and provide an inexpensive way to travel between Grantham (one hour and 15 minutes) and Skegness (one hour and 45 minutes). Coaches are also available and run between Boston (one hour and 45 minutes) and Stamford (one hour and 40 minutes), while if you wish to travel further afield, consider using National Express transport to reach Birmingham (two hours and 45 minutes), Cambridge (three hours), Glasgow (nine hours) and London (four hours and 30 minutes).

Trains

Most trains headed to Lincoln will usually require you to make a change to ultimately reach the city. Hourly train transport connects destinations such as Boston (one hour and 15 minutes), Cambridge (two hours and 30 minutes), Ely (two hours and 30 minutes), Grantham (40 minutes), Grimsby (50 minutes), Peterborough (one and a half hours) and Skegness (two hours). Trains from Lincoln also travel to Newark (25 minutes), which is located on the East Coast Main Line and provides good connections with London.
