Lincoln Art Galleries

(Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, UK)

Picture of Steep Hill and the distant cathedralArt lovers visiting Lincoln are now able to embrace the city's recently open art gallery named 'The Collection', which has immediately become the principal gallery in Lincolnshire. The Collection is quite literally crammed with wonderful masterpieces, both traditional and contemporary in style, as well as various treasures dating from the Stone Age right up to today, including a number of very alluring Roman and Viking artefacts.

Right next door and located just a matter of metres from the Collection, the Usher Gallery stands within the landscaped Temple Gardens, in Lincoln's vibrant Cathedral Quarter and near to Steep Hill. The Usher was opened in the spring of 1927, by none other than the Prince of Wales, and is closely linking with The Collection.

The Collection

Housing a diverse collection of historic paintings and outlandish contemporary art works, the Collection serves as Lincolnshire's premier museum and art gallery and is closely related to the Usher Gallery next door. The Collection was purpose-built in 2005, after considerable archaeological excavations, where some impressive Roman artefacts were discovered, a number of which are now on display, including a section of colourful stone mosaic. Resembling a medieval alleyway, the glass-covered courtyard is a particularly striking feature here and leads towards the main auditorium. On display at the Collection are examples of antique furniture and clocks, together with a wealth of traditional fine art and old masters, created by famous period artists, such as LS Lowry, John Piper and Joseph Turner, famous for matchstick men paintings, brightly coloured abstractions and watercolour landscapes respectively.
Open hours: daily - 10:00 to 16:00

Usher Gallery

The city's university is also to be found on Lindum Road and stands just a short stroll away, while Jew's House is just a block away. Known for its outstanding permanent collection of fine art and decorative pieces, the Usher is focused around its numerous paintings by Peter De Wint (1784 to 1849), an artist who originated from the USA and first visited Lincoln in 1806. Also on exhibit here is much memorabilia relating to poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson, who was born in Lincolnshire in 1809. Many of the art works on exhibit today were actually part of the private collection of the gallery's namesake and former Sheriff of London, James Ward Usher (1845 to 1921), who was a wealthy local jeweller and bequeathed £60,000 to the city so that this gallery could be built.
Open hours: Monday to Saturday - 10:00 to 17:30, Sunday - 14:30 to 17:00
