Getting Around, Kyrenia Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Kyrenia, Cyprus)

Image of Larnaca AirportGetting around North Cyprus is really quite straightforward, with bus transport on hand, as well as taxis and ferries. However, the bus transport available in Kyrenia is not especially reliable and so many holiday makers choose to hire their own set of wheels, allowing them to travel when and where to choose.

Popular rental vehicles include air-conditioned cars, open-top 4WD jeeps, scooters and mopeds, all of which provide an affordable way to travel. Taxi and ferry transport is also readily available in Kyrenia, along with a number of exceptional cycle trails. In fact, there are some of the very best cycle trails in Northern Cyprus to be found here, with the east to west routes being quite flat, particularly when compared to the steeper gradients of the Kyrenia Range escarpment.

The principal gateway into the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Ercan International Airport is just over a 30-minute drive from Kyrenia and is less than 15 minutes away from Nicosia, being located next to the village of Tymvou. Ercan Airport is considerably smaller than Larnaca Airport, to the south-east, although expansion plans are imminent and the whole airport was renovated as recently as 2004. The main airlines operating here include Atlasjet, Cyprus Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, SunExpress and Turkish Airlines, with in excess of 100 flights every week during the peak summer season. These airlines fly to a variety of European destinations, such as Ankara and Istanbul in Turkey; Cologne in Germany; and Birmingham, London and Manchester in England, UK.

Since there is currently no public transport available in Kyrenia, hiring a vehicle of some description is well worth considering. Car rental is easy to arrange in Cyprus and a number of national and Cypriot hire companies are to be found at both Ercan Airport and within the town itself, on the Alsancak and Ecevit Caddesi Girne. Those intending to travel around North Cyprus by hire car will find the island has a modern, well-maintained network of roads, with good sign-posting. As with the UK, drivers in Cyprus must always stick to the left-hand side of the road.

Buses

Bus transport in Kyrenia can only be described as poor. Public buses travel infrequently and only to a handful of outlying destinations, such as Famagusta and Nicosia. The town's bus station resides on the Bedrettin Femirel, on the southerly side of the New Town district. Alternatively, you may like to consider using the local 'dolmus' minibuses, which are really just large, shared-taxis. Dolmus minibuses are a very cheap way to reach the nearby beaches, such as Five Mile Beach (Yavuz Cikarma), since you are sharing the overall cost with other holiday makers.

Boats and Ferries

Regular ferry transport is to be found at Kyrenia's New Harbour, on the easterly side of the town. Express boats to the Turkish port town of Tasucu sail each morning, reaching their destination in just three hours. Slower ferries to Tasucu are also available, with a journey time of roughly seven hours. During the summer months, there are also some further express ferries travelling to and from Alanya in Turkey (four and a half hours), on a twice weekly basis, as well as various pleasure boat cruises.

Taxis

Private taxis are available in Kyrenia and really only used for short distances and journeying between attractions. However, if you are looking at sheer convenience and not cost, then you may like to travel by taxi to Ercan Airport (one hour), as well as Bellapais (20 minutes) and Saint Hilarion (25 minutes).
