Attractions Nearby Kyrenia, Day Trips and Excursions

(Kyrenia, Cyprus)

Bellapais (Beylerbeyi) pictureThe Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is overflowing with quality attractions, all of which are close to Kyrenia and best reached by car. Just a short drive from Kyrenia and located along a particularly steep road, Bellapais is a charming mountain village and one attraction not to be missed at any cost, being known across the island for its rather beautiful abbey.

There are three very noteworthy castles located within the Kyrenia Range, namely the Kantara Castle, the Saint Hilarion Castle and the lofty Buffavento Castle. Also consider day trips and excursions around the Korucam (Kormakitis) Peninsula, the Kaplica (Davlos) region and the extremely historical village of Lapta (Lapithos).

Bellapais (Beylerbeyi)

When you arrive at Bellapais, you will immediately be struck by the awesome views and of course, the abbey. Most tourists will find that Bellapais Abbey (an Augustinian monastery) is more handsome and photogenic than you could possibly imagine. Bellapais is a great spot to base yourself if you wish to explore North Cyprus. Beach-goers will find that the nearest beach is a bit of a drive, but very pleasant when you reach it. If you are here in May or June, then be sure to check out the Bellapais Music Festival.

Buffavento Castle

Perched rather precariously just under 1,000 metres / 3,280 feet above the Mediterranean Sea and enjoying stunning views across the plain of the Mesarya, Buffavento Castle is known to date back to the 12th century, when it was named the 'Castle of the Lion' after Richard the Lionheart took ownership. In the past, Buffavento Castle has been used for a number of different purposes, including both a beacon tower and prison. Today, the fortress remains are still quite impressive, although it is the castle's remoteness that is the main draw here.
Open hours: daily - dawn to dusk
Admission: free

Kaplica (Davlos)

The Kaplica region is a truly wonderful part of Cyprus and contains some of the last untouched areas of the island. The coastal road between Kyrenia and Kaplica is especially scenic and narrow, passing Kantara Castle along the way, as well as numerous carob and olive plantations. Kaplica Beach is a very sandy stretch, with suitable conditions for swimming.

Saint Hilarion Castle photo

Saint Hilarion Castle

Saint Hilarion Castle is an unbelievably magical ruined castle, and best viewed from beneath. Rumoured by many that none-other than Walt Disney was inspired by the sheer beauty of Saint Hilarion Castle when drawing the design for the castle featured in his epic animated 1937 movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The site now comprises three main attractions - named the Lower, Middle and Upper Enceintes. Entered via the barbican, the Lower Enceinte was once used as the garrison, while the Middle Enceinte contains the remains of a church and grand royal apartment, being once sealed off with a draw bridge.

Further image of Saint Hilarion CastleThe Upper Enceinte is reached along a steep track and entered through the Lusignan gate, where its central courtyard is surrounded by further royal apartments, kitchens and various chambers. Also worth looking out for at Saint Hilarion Castle is Prince John's tower, and the superb views of the Taurus Mountains.
Open hours: daily - 09:00 to 16:45

Korucam (Kormakitis) Peninsula

The far north-westerly tip of Cyprus is known as the Korucam Peninsula or simply Cape Kormakitis, and is easy to reach from Kyrenia, being close to Lapta. On the way, you will pass a handful of decent beaches, while when you arrive on the Korucam Peninsula, you may like to enjoy a picnic in these scenic surroundings, or take lunch at the popular Horse Shoe Beach Restaurant. A number of little-known remote religious communities inhabit the Kormakitis area, including the small village of Korucam, where a unique Aramaic dialect is still spoken.

Lapta (Lapithos)

Close to Kyrenia and a popular excursion, Lapta is worth visiting for the views alone, although this old village has successfully managed to retain many of its old-world attractions. During the mid-1990s, Lapta narrowly escaped devastation, where a forest fire ravaged the adjacent Kyrenia Range escarpment. Lapta was historically one of the island's original city kingdoms and its protected situation has attracted many foreign residents over the years. Attractions in the Lapta area include the magnificent former monastery, now named the Ayia Anastasia Resort, as well as some great restaurants with exceptional views.
