Very nearby Famagusta and to the south, the Ayia Napa International Festival is one not to miss and its exciting celebrations take place throughout the month of September. Expect processions, folk music and dancing, feasting, partying, art exhibitions and more.

Famagusta Calendar of Festivals and Events 2014 / 2015: General Information

Interestingly, it was in Famagusta where Shakespeare's Othello took place, and so whenever a Shakespeare event is staged here, the tragedy 'Othello, the Moor of Venice' is often featured in one way or another, including a recent event at the Bellapais Music Festival, in North Cyprus (next to Kyrenia).

In July, it is the International Cyprus Theatre Festival that draws the crowds, and this event is jointly hosted by a number of different towns and cities on the island, namely Famagusta, Salamis, Kyrenia and Nicosia.

However, it is without a shadow of a doubt that the International Famagusta Cultural and Art Festival is the real highlight of the city's events' calendar. Held annually between June 21st and July 12th, the International Famagusta Cultural and Art Festival features a huge mixture of music, ranging from classical and rock, to jazz, reggae and even hip-hop.

There are also various theatrical performances and similar events, which reliably attract huge crowds. Most of these events tend to take place at the Othello Tower, at the Namik Kemal Meydani, and also in the open-air, at the beautifully reconstructed ruins of the Ancient Salamis amphitheatre.
