Famagusta Beaches and Water Sports

(Famagusta, Cyprus)

Coastal viewThere is no denying that Famagusta is a strange beach resort, since some parts of the city are rather run down and fenced off entirely. However, the beaches around Famagusta are amongst the very best that Cyprus has to offer, and this resort was actually a premier tourist destination as recently as the 1960s.

The most popular and well-placed beach on offer in Famagusta is without question the sandy stretch located in front of the Palm Beach Hotel. This spot is open to non-guests and is overlooked by the terraces of the Palm Beach Hotel, being lined by a number of tropical palm trees.

General Information

Other very notable public beaches in Famagusta include the following:

Bafra Beach
Located in the nearby village of Cayirova, next to Mehmetcik and to the north of Famagusta, the Bafra Beach is a pleasant stretch of sand, with some basic facilities.

Bediz Beach
The Bediz Beach lies on the easterly coast of Cyprus and just a short distance north of Famagusta, being clearly signposted from all directions, and therefore very easy to reach. The facilities here are quite reasonable and include plenty of sun loungers and parasols, together with a restaurant and showers. Many tourists come here after visiting the Cypriot ruins of Salamis.

Glapsides Beach
Standing some 4 km / 2.5 miles to the north of Famagusta and just a short stroll from Bediz, Glapsides Beach is an extremely popular and busy part of north-eastern Cyprus. Each summer, crowds of young tourists come here to enjoy the undeniable youthful vibe and regular parties. Glapsides is long and features particularly shallow water, together with an adjacent restaurant, a bar with regular DJs, market and affordable sun lounger hire. You are also able to catch dolphin cruises here.

Nagomi Beach (Nangomi)
One not to miss and perhaps the best beach that Cyprus has to offer, Nagomi Beach is a glorious stretch of golden sand, arranged in a crescent shape. Lying alongside Nangomi Bay and situated on the Karpas Peninsula, the Nangomi Beach is split into two main areas and backed by dramatic sand dunes.

Silver Beach
Silver Beach can be found next to the Salamis ruins and close to Famagusta, where it is known for its calm Mediterranean waters. This is certainly the place to come to enjoy an afternoon of family fun, sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling, with the ancient city's submerged harbour adding much interest to the underwater landscape. A beachfront cafe is on hand here should you require a bite to eat whilst you top up your tan and soak up the Cypriot sunshine.
