Getting Around, Osijek Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Osijek, Slavonia, Croatia)

Travel to Osijek is easy, since the city comes with its own airport, offering useful links to the UK and Germany. There are also fast rail services arriving daily from the capital, Zagreb, as well as extensive bus transport connections with towns and cities in the Slavonia region at large.

Public transportation is available from Osijek Airport to the city, along with car rental, while transport around the city is also well taken care of. You can hop on and off the ancient, restored tram system, plus there are usually local buses and taxis to hand. If you are staying within the centre and only wish to travel short distances, you may well choose to simply rely on good old foot power.

Osijek Airport (OSI) / Arriving by Air

Address: Vukovarska 67, Klisa, 31000 Osijek, Croatia, HR
Tel: +385 031 514 400
Located approximately 20 km / 13 miles to the south-east of the city and within the suburb of Klisa, Osijek Airport is often referred to as Klisa Airport and lies off the road to Vukovar. This busy transport hub opens up the eastern part of Croatia and is connected to major cities within the country, as well as to the UK and Germany, seasonally. Flights arrive from the UK with Ryanair, while Germanwings serves Cologne. Croatia Airlines, meanwhile, brings in flights from Split and Dubrovnik (also only in the summer months). Shuttle buses and taxis travel between the city and the airport on a regular basis.

Car Rental

Car rental is a good idea while visiting Osijek, as there are many nearby towns and cities to check out. The roads are good in this part of the country and are mostly uncongested. The A5 highway links with the main Zagreb-Belgrade motorway, the A3. Hire cars can be pre-booked online and picked up at Klisa Airport, with the drive into the city being straightforward, via a well-signposted route. When in the city itself, parking is relatively easy to come by, with both parking lots and spaces on the streets being available.

Buses, Coaches and Trams

Bus services come in from all over the region and Osijek has one of the best equipped bus stations in the country. Regular services arrive from Zagreb (four hours) and nearby towns, such as Dakovo and Vukovar (both around 45 minutes), along with services from Belgrade (Serbia), Pecs (Hungary), Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and various destinations in Germany. Popular long-distance buses travel to and from Dubrovnik (14 hours), Pozega (two hours and 15 minutes), Rijeka (seven hours), Slavonski Brod (one hour and 45 minutes), Split (11 hours), Vienna (ten hours) and Zurich (seven hours and 30 minutes).

You don't really need to use the local bus transport for getting about the city, as it is quite compact and therefore walking between places of interest is not difficult. Alternatively, the city's extremely historic tram line is on hand for short distances, with Line 2 connecting the bus station, the railway station and the Trg Ante Starcevica. Dating back to the 1880s, the tram is cheap and tickets can be purchased either from the driver or at local newsstands (tisaks). The Saturday guided 'Tourist Tram' is particularly popular with sightseers, lasting around an hour and circling the city centre.

Trains

It is also easy to reach Osijek by train, with a high-speed line from Zagreb (three hours and 30 minutes), along with services from Bizovacke Toplice (15 minutes), Budapest (six hours), Dakovo (30 minutes), Pozega (two hours and 30 minutes), Rijeka (nine hours), Sibenik (14 hours) and Slavonski Brod (one hour and 30 minutes), as well as Koprivnica, Sarajevo and other destinations. Trains run to the city centre, with the station being located next to Trg Lavoslava Ruzicke.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available in Osijek, yet it is not really necessary to use them unless you want to quickly travel into or out of the airport. A choice of taxi transport can be found at the airport, the railway station, and at the riverside and main square.
