Osijek has always lacked on the accommodation and lodging front, although in recent years the city's magnetism has been realised and things are improving. Lots of new hotels have now appeared in the newer town, while existing hotels are being renovated or upgraded.

Most hotels are mid-range and star-rated top-enders, although there are also several youth hostel and guest house options for those on a budget. The best thing is that most accommodation is located in or around Osijek centre, meaning that you don't have to rely on public transport.

Where to Stay

Many of Osijek's hotels are sited near the Tvrda fortress on the Holy Trinity Square (Trg Svetog Trojstva), while the riverside is also a good area to be based. The Hotel Osijek is the top hotel in the city and resides at the latter, on the Promenade. This hotel is boasts luxury accommodation, has fantastic river and city views, and lies within the pedestrian zone.

There are several other hotels near here that are similarly well-placed, including the rather old-fashioned Hotel Central, which is at one of the main city squares - the Central Square (Trg Ante Starcevica). Other popular quality hotels in Osijek include the Zoo Hotel at Tvrdavica, the Villa Ariston on the Kaciceva, and the Waldinger on the Zupanijska.

Cheaper accommodation options in Osijek include the Maksimilian Guesthouse on the Franjevacka - within the Tvrdja fortress complex itself, the Pansion Regina - in the city centre, and the Youth Hostel Tufna - on the Franje Kuhaca.

Staying within the Tvrdja complex is a definite plus for those who also fancy a bit of nightlife, as there are many bars and clubs in this area. Lodging here is also well-placed for exploring the city's top landmarks, including two of the best museums.
