Osijek Landmarks and Monuments

(Osijek, Slavonia, Croatia)

Most of Osijek's best landmarks and sights involve taking a walk or relaxing in one of the many parks or green areas. Holy Trinity Square, known locally as Trg Svetog Trojstva, is the main square and a sensible place to head to get a view of the city's top landmarks. This iconic plaza is home to the huge Tvrda fortress and a couple of museums.

Also worth a look is the Water Gate, which was built in the early 18th century to provide access to the old city through the walls. In addition, Osijek has some impressive churches, including the Church of St. Michael, and the huge Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, boasting the second-tallest tower ever built in Croatia .

Holy Trinity Square (Trg Svetog Trojstva)

Address: Trg Svetog Trojstva, Osijek, Croatia, HR
Holy Trinity Square is the main square in Osijek and contains many important landmarks. The Tvrda fortress is located here, for one, along with the Museum of Slavonia, the University of Osijek, and various fountains and columns. In addition, you will also find the much vaunted Archaeological museum, plus many restaurants, bars and discos. The ornate Holy Trinity Monument is a notable centrepiece pillar and a useful point of reference, being erected almost 300 years ago. Following the Great Plague of 1738, the pillar is now dedicated to the thousands who tragically lost their lives during that year.

Church of St. Peter and St. Paul / Co-Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul (Crkva Svetog Petra i Pavla)

Address: Trg Ante Starcevica, Gornji Grad, Osijek, Croatia, HR
Tel: +385 031 310 020
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is the biggest structure in Osijek and quite hard to miss, with its 90-metre / 295-foot spire towering as it does over the Trg Ante Starcevica. More like a cathedral than a parish church and often known as the Co-Cathedral, this famous landmark hails from the end of the 19th century and is one of a typical red-brick structure, in neo-Gothic style. A chapel once stood on this site many years ago, before the arrival of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. Step inside and you will discover no less than 40 stained-glass windows and many decorative frescoes. Of note, church masses take place here between Monday and Saturday, at 07:00 and 18:30. Further services are held on Sunday mornings at 06:30, 07:30, 08:30, 10:00 and 11:30, and again early in the evening, at 18:30.

Church of St. Michael (Crkva Svetog Mihovila)

Address: Osijek, Croatia, HR
While not as impressive as the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, the Church of St. Michael is still a stunning Baroque-style edifice. It would perhaps look more at home in Vienna or Budapest, with its two lofty towers, bright yellow facade and distinctive onion-shaped domes atop. When the Habsburg forces arrived in the city, many mosques were converted, including this very structure. Inside is an elaborate pulpit and a painting showing St. Michael the Archangel with demons. Masses are held at the Church of St. Michael at 18:30, Tuesday to Friday, on Saturday at 19:30 and on Sunday at 08:30, 10:30 and 18:30. The church is fronted by a spacious plaza which is surrounded by trees and pretty buildings, and centred by a saintly statue.
