Since Windhoek is likely to be your first port of call, the National Art Gallery stands out in particular and comes with a decent collection of paintings, prints and sculptures, with both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Also in Windhoek and close to the National Art Gallery is the Bushman Art Museum, where you will discover an assortment of art works, accompanied by a good selection of classic African artefacts and regional handicrafts.

Windhoek's National Gallery of Art first opened its doors to the public in 1947. Whilst this might be considered a relatively small gallery, it nevertheless has some permanent exhibits which are worth a look. These include historic and contemporary works of art. There are also lots of paintings created by local artists, using a variety of different mediums. As well as displaying a permanent collection of art works, there are many original pieces for sale. Nearby attractions within walking distance include the National Theatre, the Windhoek Public Library, the British High Commission, the Fiscus Building and the Owela Museum.
Open hours: Tuesday to Friday - 08:00 to 17:00, Saturday - 09:00 to 13:00
Admission: free from Tuesday to Friday, charge at weekends

Bushman Art Museum

Another cultural attraction in Windhoek, this unusual art museum houses a variety of African masks, Bushman tools, paintings and other objects relating to traditional ways of life throughout Africa. An extensive shop onsite means that many of the objects on display can be bought, should you fancy purchasing a unique souvenir of your time in the city of Windhoek.
